Right when Toyota thought its floor-mat crises were over, new complaints of "unintended acceleration" due to "floor-mat entrapment" forced the automobile manufacturer to recall another 2.2 million vehicles. This latest recall, including the previous 5.5 million vehicles recalled due to "unintended acceleration," puts the tally up to 7.7 million Toyota vehicles recalled in the past two years due to improperly manufactured floor-mats.

The recall, which Toyota announced last Thursday, includes certain model year 2004-2007 Lexus RX330, RX350, and RX400h vehicles, and certain model year 2004-2006 Toyota Highlander HV vehicles. Toyota has promised owners affected by this recall a free replacement of the floor-mats and retention clips. Also included in this recall were 603,000 Toyota 4Runners from 2003-2009, 17,000 2008-2011 Lexus LX 470s, 761,000 Rav4s manufactured from 2006-2010, and 20,000 2006-2007 Lexus GS300 and GS350 all-wheel-drive vehicles.

Although no serious injuries or deaths have yet been reported in association with this recall, Clarence Ditlow, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, said Toyota included "six deaths and 110 injuries" under the category of "speed control" in an obligatory report filed to the federal government.

Toyota affirms that this recall is voluntary, but after consumer complaints and NHTSA investigations forced the corporation to recognize the safety threats posed by these floor-mats, they were obligated by federal regulations to recall these vehicles.
