After two NHTSA investigations and hundreds of consumer complaints, Ford was forced to recall a possible 1,325,000 vehicles. Certain model year 2004-2006 F-150s and certain model year 2006 Lincoln Mark LT vehicles were affected by this recall.
According to the investigative reports, these vehicles may have an internal circuit issue which could inadvertently deploy the driver's front airbag, increasing the risk of car accidents and injuries, or cause the airbag warning light to illuminate, indicating service is required.
Ford will attempt to fix this circuit issue (which is most likely due to wire chafing caused by unintended contact between the clockspring jumper wire and the driver's side frontal airbag lower horn plate) by installing new clockspring jumper wires with protective mesh coating, free of charge.
Owners affected by this recall, which began in March for some vehicles and is scheduled to start May 9, 2011 for the larger population, should be contacted by Ford during the next few weeks. For more information regarding this recall, you can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
