Numerous reports of owners having difficulty disengaging their vehicle's cruise-control system forced Mercedes-Benz to recall almost over 136,000 vehicles. Certain model year 2000-2002 M-Class vehicles and 2000-2004 M-Class AMG vehicles were affected by this recall, which is expected to begin on or before September 2011.
According to the recall report, although these vehicles were equipped with numerous ways to disengage the cruise-control system (such as tapping on the break pedal, using the cruise-control stalk, or pressing heavily on the break pedal), and while most of these methods remain effective, tapping on the break pedal may not be sufficient to disengage the cruise-control. Drivers, expecting the cruise-control to turn off with a slight tap, may panic when this does not work, which may cause an accident.
Mercedes-Benz dealers will repair the break-pedal system defect free of charge during the recall. For more information regarding this recall, owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372.
